INDIVIDUAL EMDR CONSULTATION
(Basic & Advanced EMDR Skills)
“One of the greatest values of mentors is the ability to see ahead what others cannot see and to help them navigate a course to their destination”
- John C. Maxwell
Have you completed the EMDRIA-approved EMDR Basic Training and need quality consultation to help you achieve certification? Are you struggling with applying the Standard Protocol or with more complicated case? Do you want to advance your clinical skills beyond the Standard Protocol to be more effective addressing complex trauma, dissociation, psychological defense networks, and attachment issues?
For new EMDR clinicians, it can be challenging putting your newly acquired skills into real-life practice with clients. Without having the appropriate guidance and support to harness your strengths and address your growth edges, many clinicians may find it troublesome becoming comfortable in their own skin as a freshly trained EMDR practitioner.
For the more seasoned EMDR clinician, the challenges and intricacies working with complex trauma, dissociative disorders, addictions, and structural dissociation can often leave both clients and clinicians alike feeling stuck as treatment progress becomes muddled or blocked. We’ll work together exploring strategies and interventions to help get both yourself and clients unstuck, and moving forward in their recovery journey.
Having appropriate mentorship is pivotal to building your foundation as an EMDR clinician. With the right guidance and support helping you navigate complex issues and cultivating advanced clinical skills; you’ll soon develop greater comfort and confidence in your own skin integrating EMDR therapy into your clinical repertoire.
Here at Breakthrough Recovery of Colorado we are looking forward to being a meaningful part of your journey in becoming an outstanding EMDR clinician.
INDIVIDUAL CONSULTATION FOR EMDR BASIC TRAINING & EMDRIA CERTIFICATION
The mentorship that occurs between a Consultant-in-Training (CIT) and a Consultee is vital to a Consultee’s professional growth and development as an EMDR therapist. Here are a few things you can expect from your consultation experience.
This format of individual consultation is for clinicians who have completed their EMDR Basic Training and are actively working toward the ten (10) hours required hours of consultation for EMDR Basic Training or twenty (20) required hours of consultation for EMDR certification.
We will explore, examine, and address clinical issues related to all 8 Phases of EMDR therapy, focusing heavily on Phases 3-6.
We will work towards building your clinical skills and efficacy using the Standard Protocol, including the 3-pronged approach (Past, Present, Future) for the Standard Protocol.
We will explore and discuss basic case conceptualization, assessment procedures, and client complexity.
We will collaborate to address any barriers or challenges that may arise in the practice of EMDR therapy and the Standard Protocol.
* DISCLAIMER:
* Consultant’s-in-Training (CIT) are only permitted to sign for a maximum of fifteen (15) hours of the required twenty (20) hours of consultation for clinicians who have completed their EMDRIA-approved EMDR Basic Training and are working towards EMDRIA-approved Certified EMDR Therapist. The other required 5 hours of consultation must be obtained through an EMDRIA-approved EMDR Consultant.
* You are required to attend a minimum of eight (8) hours of consultation (individual and/or group) before your CIT will sign for your consultation hours and draft your letter of recommendation to EMDRIA for certification.

ADVANCED EMDR CONSULTATION FOR ENHANCING EMDR PRACTICE
Advanced EMDR Consultation is designed to help clinicians deepen their competency and effectiveness in treating complex trauma, focusing on the nuanced application of EMDR therapy in cases with significant dissociation and other complex presentations. Through targeted consultation, clinicians will develop the expertise necessary to use EMDR therapy beyond the standard protocol to help clients with complex trauma histories, ultimately improving therapeutic outcomes and confidence in handling challenging cases.
This consultation format is for either EMDR Basic Trained or EMDRIA Certified clinicians, and is intended to enhance a Consultee’s EMDR skills and knowledge beyond the standard protocol to address more complex cases.
We will dive deeper into complex trauma, attachment disorders, dissociation, nervous system dysregulation, and ego state therapy to integrate with your EMDR practice.
We will learn how to assess types of dissociation, dissociative tendencies, maladaptive coping (defense) strategies, handling addictions and other comorbidities, manage therapeutic risks, reduce abreaction (emotional flooding), address structural dissociation with multiple ego states, support attachment repair, build consultee’s self-efficacy when a client is blocking or numbing during reprocessing, and integrating interventions to increase safety and stabilization with EMDR therapy.
Teach clients how to manage triggers and prevent emotional flooding and/or dissociation to ensure client preparedness for and during reprocessing.
Receive ongoing education and consultation for continued growth in advanced EMDR techniques and protocols such as: DeTUR, Flash Technique, RTEP/GTEP, Early Trauma Protocol, distress tolerance/emotional regulation skills, somatic EMDR tools, Feeling State Protocol, interweaves, and targeting of idealization or avoidance defenses.
Address any vicarious trauma and therapist burnout in high-intensity EMDR work.
* DISCLAIMER:
* It is important to note that CIT’s are not permitted to sign for more than fifteen (15) of the required twenty (20) hours of consultation for EMDRIA Certification. Consultees will need to supplement any additional consultation hours with an EMDRIA Approved Consultant.
* You are required to attend a minimum of eight (8) hours of consultation (individual and/or group) before your CIT will sign for your consultation hours and/or draft your letter of recommendation to EMDRIA for certification.
CONSULTATION VS. SUPERVISION
It is important to note that consultation is NOT clinical supervision. Consultation focuses on the mastery of standard EMDR therapy and integrating EMDR into your practice. You are responsible for the therapeutic relationship with your clients and competency in the modalities you offer. Your CIT or Consultant does not hold liability for how you practice.
Alternative Limits of Consultation for Unlicensed Clinicians:
For EMDR Trained clinicians who are unlicensed or retain provisional licensure it is expressly understood that no supervision or employment relationship exists between CIT and Consultee. If a pre-licensed Consultee is providing psychotherapy, he/she must be doing so under the license of an approved supervisor.
Pre-licensed Consultee’s must inform and obtain written authorization from their direct clinical supervisor who acknowledges that they are solely responsible for the nature and quality of services being provided to the Consultee’s clients. At all times, the Consultee will work closely with their supervisor, relying on Supervisor’s judgment in offering psychotherapy to Consultee’s clients. When significant clinical, ethical, legal, or professional issues arise which merit it, Consultee and/or Supervisor will obtain additional consultation from another consultant or relevant professional in accordance with the professional standards of Consultee’s or Supervisors licensure and/or certification, jurisdiction, and professional memberships.
